Ship’s time

The ship’s time chip in the header, setting the zone and clock-change nights (Master only on a ship licence), and the wrong-clock warning.

Updated 2026-10-11 · SeaReady’s own words. The app changes often — if a screen looks different from this page, tell us from Help → Suggest an improvement.

What it is for

Ships keep their own time, and it changes as you cross zones. SeaReady shows the ship’s time as a small chip in the header (for example "14:32 UTC+4") so everyone aboard reads the same time, and it uses that time for rest hours. Everything else — checklist answers, photos, findings, certificates — is dated by your phone’s own clock.

Who can use it

Everyone can see the chip once a ship’s time is set. On a ship account the setting is kept in the ship’s file, so every phone on the ship shows the same ship’s time. On a ship licence only the Master can change it: everyone else sees the card read-only with the note "Only the Master can change the ship's time". On a personal plan, or when you are not on a ship, you set your own (kept with your vessel profile on this phone when you are not on a ship).

Step by step

  1. Open Settings → Ship and find the "Ship's time" card. Under "Ship's time zone now" pick the zone the ship keeps today, from UTC-12 to UTC+14 in half hours (plus the quarter-hour zones in use). "Not set" removes the chip.
  2. Add the nights the clocks change rather than changing the zone by hand: under "Clock change" choose the date, pick "Clocks retarded 1 h (25 h day)" or "Clocks advanced 1 h (23 h day)" and tap "Add". The change happens at the end of that day’s ship time — the extra or missing hour is the last one, the same way the rest-hours planner counts it.
  3. Remove a change with its bin button in the list. A change dated before the zone was set is marked "(before the zone was set; rest hours only)".
  4. Tap the chip in the header any time to see "Ship's time" with the ship’s time and date next to your phone’s time, and a link to "Change ship's time in Settings" (on a ship licence, crew see "Only the Master can change the ship's time" instead).

Tips

  • A new rest-hours day is pre-filled with the clock change set here, so a 25-hour or 23-hour day is counted correctly without extra typing.
  • When you are online the app compares your phone’s clock with the server’s (shortly after opening, every 30 minutes, when the app comes back to the front and when the connection returns). If it is more than 10 minutes out, a bar says "Your phone's clock looks wrong (about … fast/slow). Records are dated by the phone, so please check it." It never changes your records or your phone.

Limits and good to know

  • Until a zone is set, nothing shows in the header.
  • On a ship licence a change from anyone but the Master is not saved: the server keeps the ship’s time and the phone shows "The ship's time was not changed. Only the Master can change the ship's time."
  • Only one-hour clock changes can be entered (retarded or advanced); one change per date.
  • The wrong-clock warning works only online; offline the app has nothing to compare with.
  • Setting the ship’s time does not change any existing record; only rest hours use it.

Use it in the app

The same page sits inside SeaReady under Help → Handbook and behind the “?” in the screen’s header, and it reads offline at sea.
