FAQs
Straight answers to what seafarers, Masters and shore offices ask about SeaReady: using it offline at sea, what the free plan includes, how a ship joins with a join code and link code, who sees your rest hours, and how SeaReady helps you prepare for SIRE 2.0, RightShip, CDI, OVID, BIQ5 and Port State Control inspections.
64 questions in 8 sections.
Getting started and offline use
Installing SeaReady, using it at sea without internet, and keeping your data safe.
What is SeaReady?
SeaReady is an inspection-readiness app for seafarers that works offline at sea. It covers SIRE 2.0 vetting, RightShip RISQ, CDI, OVID, BIQ5 and Port State Control (PSC) checklists, the SIRE 2.0 photo repository, rest hours, certificates, drills, calculators, crew tools and an AI mock inspector. One app works on phones, tablets and computers.
How do I install SeaReady on my phone?
Open seaready.net on the phone. iPhone: tap the Share button in Safari, then “Add to Home Screen”. Android: open the Chrome menu and tap “Install app” or “Add to Home screen”. Computers can install it from the browser address bar too. There is no app store download — it installs straight from the website and updates itself.
Does SeaReady work offline at sea?
Yes. SeaReady keeps your data on the phone, so checklists, rest hours, certificates, drills, calculators and saved training videos all work without a signal. Only the AI features, the weather forecast, signing in, keeping your devices in sync and sharing the ship file between phones need a connection; they catch up the next time you are online.
Do I need an account? Is a card needed?
You need a free SeaReady account, made with your e-mail address at seaready.net/register. No card is asked for. Every person uses their own account — there are no shared ship logins.
Which ship types does SeaReady cover?
Crude, product and chemical tankers, LNG and LPG carriers, bulk carriers, general cargo, container ships, Ro-Ro and passenger ships, offshore vessels and barges. You choose the ship type in Settings and SeaReady shows the inspections that apply: SIRE 2.0 and CDI for tankers and gas carriers, RightShip for bulk carriers, OVID for offshore vessels, BIQ5 for barges and PSC for every ship.
Do my phone and computer stay in sync?
Yes, on the trial and every paid plan. Sign in with the same account on up to 2 devices (for example your phone and your laptop) and they show the same ship, checklist answers, certificates, findings, drills, rest hours, crew and life tools and training log. A change on one appears on the other within about a minute while both are open, and changes made offline catch up when the connection is back. A new device brings your data with it, so you do not set up again. Photos and voice notes sync too: they upload in the background and the other device downloads them when you open them. On the free plan your data stays on each device; the copy already saved for you is kept. You can see your devices, the last sync and “Sync now” in Settings → Account.
How do I back up my SeaReady data?
Settings → Backup & storage → “Export full backup” saves everything on the phone in one .zip file (checklists, photos, certificates, your personal records). Keep it somewhere safe and use “Restore” on a new phone. Paid plans also keep an automatic encrypted cloud backup of your records; photos and voice notes are kept in the cloud separately by photo and voice-note sync (paid plans and ship licences), and the .zip file carries them too.
Plans, prices and the free plan
What is free, what the paid plans add, the 7-day trial and how to buy.
Is SeaReady free?
Yes. The core inspection toolkit is free for ever with no card: every checklist question to read, rest hours, certificates, drills, calculators, crew tools, half the oral exam questions and 3 printed reports a month. Paid plans (Crew from $9.99 a month) let you answer every checklist question and add the AI features.
What exactly does the free plan include?
You can read every question in SIRE 2.0, CDI, OVID, RightShip, BIQ5 and the PSC checklists. You can answer the first 2 questions in each chapter (SIRE 2.0, CDI, OVID and each PSC list) and every question in the first 2 sections of RightShip and BIQ5. Answers you saved earlier always stay visible and in your reports. You also get half of the AI-made training videos and lesson pictures, half of the mock-inspector topics for your rank (offline practice, no AI), your own rest hours, certificates, drills, calculators and crew tools. The officer tools show as a preview.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Every new account gets a 7-day free trial with Officer Pro limits — 100 AI questions a day, the officer tools and ship-file sharing — with no card. Every new ship also gets one 7-day ship trial when its Master adds it; each IMO number gets one ship trial, ever.
What happens when my free trial ends?
Nothing is deleted. You move to the free plan: AI switches off, every question stays readable, and you can answer the first 2 questions in each chapter (RightShip and BIQ5: the first 2 sections). Buying any plan switches everything back on, with your answers still there.
How much do the paid plans cost?
Crew: $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Officer Pro: $49.99 a month or $499.99 a year. Ship licence (per ship, up to 10 people): $99.99 a month or $899.99 a year, plus $19.99 a month or $239.88 a year for each pack of 10 more people. Prices are in US dollars.
What is the difference between Crew and Officer Pro?
Both answer every checklist question and open all the training videos. Crew gives 25 AI questions a day, speak-to-type and a short AI practice of the mock inspector. Officer Pro gives 100 AI questions a day, the full AI mock inspector with a readiness PDF, the findings tracker, next-port PSC targeting and sharing the ship file between phones.
How do I buy a plan?
Crew and officers buy in the app under Settings → Plan & billing. A Master buys the ship licence under Settings → Ship. A company buys licences for its ships at seaready.net/company and receives a licence key and ship link codes after payment.
Can I cancel a plan?
Yes, at any time. Plans renew automatically until you cancel; after cancelling you keep the plan until the end of the period you paid for, then move to the free plan without losing your data.
What is Double AI?
Double AI is an in-app add-on that doubles your daily AI questions for 30 days — handy in the weeks before an inspection or an oral exam. On a ship licence it doubles both the per-phone and the whole-ship limit. You find it in the app under Settings → Plan & billing.
Ship licence and how a ship joins
The Master, join codes, the company link code, ranks and handing over.
What is a SeaReady ship licence?
A licence for one ship (one IMO number) that covers up to 10 people, with packs of 10 more. Everyone aboard shares one ship file, AI is on for everyone (100 questions a day per phone, 1,000 a day for the whole ship — 100 per seat, so each extra pack of 10 adds 1,000), each chapter is changed by the rank that owns it, and the Master sees the whole crew’s rest hours and training progress.
How does a ship join SeaReady?
Four steps. 1) The Master adds the ship with its IMO number under Settings → Ship → “I’m the Master” — this starts the 7-day ship trial. 2) The Master makes join codes and the crew type them under Settings → Ship → “I have a join code”. 3) The company buys the licence and gets a link code for the ship. 4) The Master types the link code under Settings → Ship → Company licence and taps Link.
How do crew join the ship with a join code?
The Master makes a join code (8 letters and numbers) and gives it to the crew. Each crew member makes their own free account and types it under Settings → Ship → “I have a join code”. A code works only for that ship and lasts 72 hours unless the Master makes a longer one (up to 30 days). A code made for a rank is for one person; a general code lets up to 10 people join.
Who sets ranks and who can change the answers?
Only the Master sets ranks — nobody can give themselves a rank with a code. Everyone aboard reads every answer, but each chapter is changed only by the rank that owns it (for example cargo by the Chief Officer, machinery by the Chief Engineer) and by the Master, who can let a person edit more chapters. Every change is recorded with who and when, and the Master can undo it.
What is a ship link code?
After payment the company receives one link code for each ship. The Master types it once in the app under Settings → Ship → Company licence and taps Link; the ship is then on the company licence. A link code is valid for 14 days — if it runs out or is lost, the office makes a new one on the shore dashboard (“New link code”).
How does the Master hand over to the next Master?
Before signing off, the Master taps “Make Master” next to the new Master’s name under Settings → Ship → People aboard. If the new Master is not aboard in SeaReady yet, the outgoing Master gives him a handover code instead — whoever types it joins the ship as Master. There is always exactly one Master.
The Master left without handing over — what now?
The shore office opens the ship on seaready.net/shore and taps “Make Master” next to someone aboard. If nobody suitable is aboard yet, the office taps “Code for new Master” and sends that code to the new Master, who types it in “Join a ship”: he joins and becomes Master in one step. The code works once and for 7 days, and the old Master is told by e-mail.
What happens when a crew member signs off or leaves the ship?
They tap “Leave ship” (or the Master removes them). Their seat is freed and the ship file leaves their phones, so they no longer see anything about the ship. They keep the app and their own records — their rest hours and training log stay on their phone. The Master keeps a copy of their rest-hour record (the ship must keep it) and their training progress, read-only and marked “left the ship”. Nobody else aboard sees either. To free a seat for someone going on leave, the Master taps “Free seat” on their phone instead — they can rejoin by themselves later while a seat is free.
We are on personal plans on the same ship, with no ship licence — can we work together?
Yes. When you set your ship’s IMO number, SeaReady tells you how many other people use it on the same ship — a number only, never who they are. One of you taps “Start working together”, the others tap “Ask to join”. Then you choose a Master: someone proposes him (usually the person whose rank is Master), another person confirms, and he accepts. Nothing is shared until each person switches it on in Settings → Ship → “Sharing with my ship”. If you do not opt in, nothing changes for you.
In a crew group, what is shared and can I stop?
Each item is off until you switch it on, and there is a “Share all” button: your rest hours with the Master, your training progress with the Master, following rank-based edit rights (you then change only your own chapters), and the ship file (checklists — needs Officer Pro or a trial; Crew and Free keep it on the phone). Free plan users can join and share; their own plan limits stay. You can stop any item at any time: nothing new is sent, and what you already shared is removed from the Master’s view unless you ticked “the Master may keep what I already shared”. Without your OK nothing your own plan gives you is taken away — for example, Officer Pro keeps editing every chapter unless you accept rank-based edit rights.
What happens to our crew group if the company buys a ship licence?
The group becomes the licensed ship: the Master, the people and what was already shared are kept. Everyone is told what changes: under the company licence sharing is automatic — rest hours and training progress go to the Master, edit rights follow ship ranks and the ship file is shared. The office (shore) dashboard comes only with a ship licence.
Can a ship get a second free trial?
No. One IMO number is one ship in SeaReady for ever, with one 7-day ship trial. If everyone leaves, the next Master can set the ship up again, but it does not get another trial. One person can start at most two ship trials.
Privacy: rest hours, training progress and your data
Who sees what — the crew, the Master and the shore office.
Who can see my rest hours?
On a ship licence, only you and the Master — other crew never see your rest hours, and they are never sent in the ship file. On a personal plan they go to the Master only if you join your ship’s crew group and switch on “Share my rest hours with the Master”; otherwise they stay on your own devices (kept in step between your own phone and computer); on the free plan they stay on your phone.
Does the Master see my training progress?
On a ship licence, yes — only the Master, never other crew. On a personal plan only if you switch on “Share my training progress with the Master” in your ship’s crew group. The Master sees each person’s mock-inspector and orals practice, lessons, videos watched, drills and checklist answers, and can print it to show the inspector the crew are prepared. When you leave the ship, the Master keeps it read-only (marked “left the ship”) and you keep your own log on your phone.
What does the shore office or company see?
Numbers and dates only: the readiness score, open critical items, certificate expiry dates, how many rest-hour breach days there were, open findings, the next inspection and the names and ranks of the people aboard. The office never sees checklist answers, notes, photos, rest-hour records or anyone’s personal records.
Where are my pay, documents, tax days and diary kept?
On your phone — and, on the trial or a paid plan, in your own synced copy so your other signed-in device shows them too (the diary only in its locked, encrypted form). Your wage and contract wallet, documents, tax-day count, diary and other personal records are never sent to the ship, the Master or the office, and only you can read the synced copy. They are also in your own backup file.
How long does SeaReady keep a ship’s history, and how long must official records be kept?
On a ship licence SeaReady keeps the ship’s history for 3 years: the checklist change history (every change listed for 90 days and undoable, then kept as daily totals), each person’s rest-hour record and the crew training progress — also after someone leaves. That does not replace the official records, which you keep as your flag and company require. The usual periods are: Oil Record Book (Parts I and II) and Cargo Record Book — 3 years after the last entry (MARPOL Annex I regs 17 and 36, Annex II reg. 15); Garbage Record Book — at least 2 years after the last entry (MARPOL Annex V reg. 10); bunker delivery notes — 3 years after delivery (MARPOL Annex VI reg. 18); Ballast Water Record Book — 2 years on board after the last entry, then 3 more years with the company (BWM Convention reg. B-2); rest-hour records — MLC 2006 Standard A2.3 requires them to be kept and endorsed and the flag sets how long (the UK, for example, asks for at least 1 year). ISM records follow your company’s safety management system. Inspectors and PSC can ask to see any of these that are still inside their period, so check your flag’s rules.
Do photos and voice notes sync? Who sees them?
Yes, on the trial, every paid plan and a ship licence. Photos and voice notes on ship things — checklist answers, findings, photo positions, permits — go to the ship’s private storage, and everyone who sees the ship file sees them: the Master sees all, so the Chief Engineer’s voice note plays on the Master’s phone. Your own ones (wallet and document photos, your diary photos, which stay locked with your PIN) go only to your own signed-in devices and never to the ship. They upload in the background when you are online (photos are shrunk first) and download when you open them, then stay for offline use. A small badge on each photo shows whether it is on this device only, uploading or in the cloud, and Settings → Account shows the storage used (500 MB for you, 2 GB per ship). On the free plan they stay on the device that took them. The shore office never sees photos or voice notes.
Inspections: SIRE 2.0, RightShip, CDI, OVID, BIQ5 and PSC
What SeaReady helps you prepare for each vetting and Port State Control inspection.
How does SeaReady help with a SIRE 2.0 inspection?
It gives you a chapter-by-chapter SIRE 2.0 inspection checklist to answer and track, human-factors interview practice for every rank, the SIRE 2.0 photo repository, a PIQ / HVPQ wizard, a zone walk-round and a printable inspection report, so the ship can show its evidence on the day.
Does SeaReady have SIRE 2.0 questions for my rank?
Yes. The mock inspector asks interview questions chosen for your rank — Master, Chief Officer, 2nd and 3rd Officer, Chief Engineer, 2nd Engineer, junior engineers, deck and engine ratings, the SSO and the cook. The free plan offers half of the topics for your rank as offline practice; paid plans add the AI interviewer that listens to your answer and follows up.
Does the photo repository match the OCIMF SIRE 2.0 template?
Yes. The photo positions follow OCIMF’s SIRE 2.0 photograph list: 36 photos for a tanker or gas carrier and 42 for a shuttle tanker, each with a hint on what to show. SeaReady reminds you when photos are getting old so you can keep them current.
Does SeaReady cover RightShip inspections (RISQ)?
Yes. Bulk carriers get a RightShip RISQ inspection checklist section by section, with what the inspector looks for and the evidence to have ready.
Does it cover CDI, OVID and BIQ5?
Yes. Chemical and gas tankers get CDI preparation, offshore vessels get OVID (OVIQ4) preparation and barges get BIQ5 — each as a checklist you can answer, track and print.
How does SeaReady help with Port State Control (PSC)?
Every ship gets PSC checklists — certificates, crew papers, drills, life-saving and fire-fighting equipment and MLC — plus the current Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) questions. Officer Pro and ship licences add next-port PSC targeting and a findings tracker.
Is the SIRE 2.0 question wording official?
No. SeaReady writes its own preparation questions and guidance in plain English and is not affiliated with OCIMF, RightShip, CDI or any MoU. Always check against the current official documents.
How do you keep the rules and information up to date?
Every week we check the official sources — OCIMF, RightShip, CDI, IMO, ILO, the Paris and Tokyo MoU, the USCG and others — for changes, and every month we read the official documents in full. When something changes we update the app straight away. Where a detail cannot be confirmed from an official source, the app says “Not confirmed — please check manually” instead of guessing. The app updates itself: when a new version is ready you see one “Update now” banner, and your data stays as it was.
Can I print a report for the inspector or the office?
Yes. The inspection report, defence pack, photo contact sheet and many records print or save as PDF. Paid plans (and the 7-day trial) print everything, as often as you like, with your ship’s name and no SeaReady mark. The free plan prints 3 of the main documents a month in total — readiness report, inspection report summary and your own rest-hour record — watermarked “Made with SeaReady (free)”; finishing a checklist chapter or a mock-inspector or orals session earns 1 extra print (up to 3 more a month). The full report with photos, defence pack, full evidence bundle, photo contact sheet and crew reports are on the paid plans. Prints are counted on your account, so they follow you to a new phone.
Training videos and AI
The AI-made training videos and pictures, the mock inspector and daily AI limits.
Are the training videos real footage?
No. The training videos and the good/poor lesson pictures are AI-made illustrations and are labelled that way. Each one shows “officer check pending” until a ship’s officer has reviewed it. Use them to learn what to look for, and always follow your ship’s procedures.
Can I watch the training videos offline?
Yes. The app saves the videos onto the phone while you have a connection — by default only the ones for your ship type — and then they play offline. You can manage this under Settings → “Training videos on this device”.
How many AI questions can I ask a day?
Free plan: none. Crew: 25 a day. Officer Pro and the free trial: 100 a day. Ship licence: 100 a day per phone and up to 1,000 a day for the whole ship (100 for every seat — 1,000 more for each extra pack of 10), whichever is reached first. Double AI doubles all of these. The count resets at midnight UTC, and a question that fails is not counted.
What can the AI do?
The AI mock inspector (voice or text), the orals examiner, guidance on any checklist question, “explain in my language”, the certificate scanner, photo reading and the nameplate troubleshooter. Spoken answers are on paid plans.
Does the AI work without internet?
No — AI needs a connection. Everything else, including offline mock-inspector practice and saved videos, works at sea without one.
Can the AI be wrong?
Yes. AI answers are a study aid, not an authority. Check anything important against the current regulations, your company procedures and the official inspection documents.
Can SeaReady help me prepare for CoC oral exams?
Yes. The orals examiner asks deck and engine oral exam questions by level and marks your answer. The built-in bank of 696 questions works offline: the free plan asks every other question (half the bank, for every department and level); any paid plan opens all of them. The AI examiner that listens to your answers is on the paid plans and the trial.
Shore office dashboard
For companies: signing in, link codes, stale ships, changing Masters and renewals.
How does the office sign in to the shore dashboard?
Go to seaready.net/shore and sign in with the company licence key you received after payment. A session lasts 12 hours. There are no separate shore accounts — keep the key somewhere safe, because SeaReady stores only a fingerprint of it.
What does the shore dashboard show?
Every ship on your licence, highest risk first, with its readiness score, open critical items, the next inspection, certificates expired or expiring within 30 days, rest-hour breach days in the last 7 days, open findings and when it last reported — plus fleet totals at the top. You can print it.
What does “stale” mean on the shore dashboard?
A ship marked stale has not reported for 7 days or more — nobody aboard has opened SeaReady online. It stays in the list but is left out of the fleet totals until it reports again.
A ship shows as not linked — what do we do?
The Master has not entered the ship link code yet, or it has run out (codes last 14 days). Tap “New link code” for that ship on the shore dashboard and send it to the Master, who enters it under Settings → Ship → Company licence.
Can the office change the Master?
Yes. Open the ship and tap “Make Master” next to someone aboard. If the new Master is not aboard in SeaReady yet, tap “Code for new Master” and send him the code; it works once, for 7 days. The current Master is e-mailed every time and every change is logged.
How do renewals work, and what if a payment fails?
Licences renew automatically. If a payment fails the ship keeps working for 3 more days; after that AI pauses until the payment goes through. The ship stays linked to the company, so nothing has to be done again aboard.
How do we add more ships or lost the licence key?
Contact us from seaready.net/contact. We can add ships to your licence, and if the licence key is lost we help you replace it after checking who you are.
Troubleshooting
Update banners, being signed out, changing or losing a phone, and video downloads.
Why was I signed out?
Either the app was not opened online for 90 days, or your account was signed in on another device and this one was signed out. Sign in again with your e-mail — the data on the phone is still there. Opening SeaReady online at least once every 90 days keeps you signed in.
I changed my phone — what do I do?
Just sign in on the new phone. If it says your account is already in use on 2 devices, the sign-in screen lists them and you choose the old one to sign out — no need to find the old phone. You can also sign a phone out any time in Settings → Account → “My phones”. On a ship licence your place on the ship moves to the new phone by itself (the Master does not need to do anything and sees “moved to a new phone” in the crew list). Move your personal records with a backup file: Settings → Backup & storage → “Export full backup” on the old phone, “Restore” on the new one.
I lost my phone — how do I get my data back?
Sign in on the new phone and restore your last backup file (or your cloud backup on a paid plan). Then sign the lost phone out in Settings → Account → “My phones” (or choose it when the sign-in screen asks which phone to sign out). On a ship licence your place on the ship and the ship file move to the new phone by themselves. If you lost both of your devices, just sign in on the new one: a device not used for 30 days is signed out automatically to make room (and gives back its seat on the ship). If it is less than 30 days, contact us and we free a place.
The training videos will not download for offline use.
Videos download only while you are online, stop when the phone has less than 200 MB free or is in data-saver mode, and by default include only your ship type. Check Settings → “Training videos on this device”. On the free plan only the free half of the videos is downloaded.
My join code does not work.
Codes run out after 72 hours (or the time the Master chose), can be cancelled by the Master, and a code made for one rank works only once. The ship may also have no free seats. Ask the Master for a new code. If the Master removed you from the ship, he must tap “Allow back” first. If he only freed your seat while you were on leave, tap “Add this device” under Settings → Ship — no code needed while a seat is free.
It says my daily AI limit is reached.
Each plan has a daily number of AI questions (on a ship licence the whole ship also shares a daily total). The count resets at midnight UTC. Everything else keeps working; Double AI in the app doubles the limit for 30 days.
Still have a question?
A mariner reads every message. The guides go deeper on each inspection.
