Orals examiner

Practise your certificate of competency oral exam in MCA, DG Shipping, MARINA, USCG or AMSA style, with scores, model answers and an offline bank.

What it is for

The orals examiner lets you practise the oral exam for a certificate of competency. It asks questions in the style of one of five administrations — UK MCA, India DG Shipping, MARINA (Philippines), USCG or AMSA — for one of six certificates: OOW deck (STCW II/1), Chief Mate (II/2), Master (II/2), OOW engine (III/1), Second Engineer (III/2) or Chief Engineer (III/2). A senior certificate is examined on the operational questions too.

There are two ways to run it. The "AI examiner" asks, listens to your typed answer, scores it out of 10 and gives a model answer and a reference. The "Offline question bank" asks 8 questions from SeaReady’s built-in bank of 696 checked questions (deck and engine, every level), scores each answer by the key points you mentioned, and shows the key points you missed, a model answer and the source. The AI examiner draws its questions from the same bank, and any reference it gives is checked against SeaReady’s verified list — an unverified reference is replaced by "Check the relevant regulation in your study material".

This is practice, not the real examination. The AI imitates the administration’s style but does not know the board’s current syllabus or pass mark; the setup screen names the published syllabus to check. Model answers are study notes, and where a rule depends on flag or company the answer says so.

Who can use it

Everyone can use the offline bank. On the Free plan the bank asks every other question (half of them) for each department and level, and the locked ones show "locked on the free plan" in the question list. The AI examiner needs the free trial or any paid plan, counts against your daily AI questions and needs internet; when the trial has ended the screen says "The AI examiner needs a plan". Any paid plan, the trial or a ship licence opens the whole bank.

Step by step

  1. Open "Orals examiner" from the Learn group of the menu.
  2. Choose the "Administration" and the "Certificate" (the app pre-selects OOW deck or OOW engine from your rank).
  3. Open "Browse the questions (…)" if you want to see the bank for this certificate first.
  4. Tap "AI examiner" or "Offline question bank", then "Start the oral".
  5. Type your answer in "Answer as you would to the examiner…" and press Enter or tap the send button; after each answer you see "Score n/10", any "Key points not mentioned", the "Model answer" and the "Ref".
  6. Tap the stop button to finish early, or answer all the questions; the summary shows your average over the questions answered.
  7. Tap "New oral" to go back to the setup and run it again.

Tips

  • Offline scores only count the key points you mentioned — a rough guide. Go over the model answers you scored lowest on, then run it again.
  • Write at least a sentence or two: an answer under 8 words is capped at 3 out of 10 in offline mode.
  • If the AI examiner is busy or the connection drops, the app switches to the built-in bank by itself and tells you.

Limits and good to know

  • A finished oral (certificate, administration style, number of questions, average score and weak topics) is written to your personal training log on this phone. On a ship licence it goes to the ship’s Master only; on a personal plan only if you opt in; other crew never see it.
  • On the Free plan, finishing an oral of at least 3 scored answers earns 1 extra print for the month (up to 3 extra a month).
  • The AI examiner needs internet and a plan; the offline bank works at sea with no signal.
  • Questions tagged for one administration are only asked when that administration is selected.

Use it in the app

The same page sits inside SeaReady under Help → Handbook and behind the “?” in the screen’s header, and it reads offline at sea.
