See it like the inspector
A one-minute lesson for every SIRE 2.0 photo position: what the inspector looks for, common findings, how to shoot it, with pictures and clips.

What it is for
"See it like the inspector" is a one-minute lesson for each of the 47 positions in the SIRE 2.0 photograph list (OCIMF’s official list, numbered the way OCIMF numbers them). Each lesson is written in SeaReady’s own words from the inspector’s side of the photo comparison: "What the inspector looks for", "Common negative findings" and "How to photograph it", plus the SIRE 2.0 chapter the photo feeds.
Most lessons also carry a pair of AI-made illustrations — "Inspection-ready" and "What the inspector flags" — and two 15-second clips: a walk-around of the area in inspection-ready condition, and the kind of defects an inspector notices first. The pictures and clips are labelled AI-made and "officer check pending" until an officer has reviewed them; trust your own SMS and the lesson text over the picture.
The same lesson opens from the "Lesson" button on every card in the photo repository, so you can read it just before you take the photo.
Who can use it
Everyone, on every plan. The lesson text is open to all. On the Free plan the pictures and clips are open for every other lesson (half of them); the others show a greyed box "Pictures and videos for this position — Free plan: half of the lessons have them". Any paid plan, the free trial or a ship licence opens all of them.
Step by step
- Open "See it like the inspector" from the Learn group of the menu.
- Type in "Search lessons" (for example lifeboat, manifold, alarms) to filter by position name, group or the words in the lesson.
- Tap "Has video" to show only the positions that have clips; the count of matching lessons is shown beside it.
- Tap a position (the OCIMF photograph number is in the small badge) to open its lesson; tap again to close it.
- Read the two pictures, play the clips, then the three text blocks, and note the line "Feeds SIRE 2.0 chapter …".
- Tap "Go to the photo repository — every card has a Lesson button." to move on to taking the photos.
Tips
- Read the "How to photograph it" block before you shoot: the same framing on both sides of the ship lets the inspector compare like with like.
- Open the lesson on the photo repository card while you stand at the position — the dialog is called "See it like the inspector — <position>".
What the inspector looks for
- The inspector compares your photo with what they see on board and with the previous set. A clean, well-framed photo that shows the whole area, with marks and labels readable, is fair to the ship; a tight crop that hides a corner invites a question.
- The "Common negative findings" list is what is raised most often at that position — rust streaks, faded marks, missing guards, unrecorded damage. Fix those first, then photograph.
Limits and good to know
- Opening a lesson is written to your personal training log on this phone (marked finished after 30 seconds on the lesson, one line per lesson per day). It goes to the Master only on a ship licence, or if you opt in on a personal plan; other crew never see it.
- The pictures and clips need to have been downloaded or viewed once while online to show offline; the lesson text always works offline.
- The illustrations are AI-made, not photos of a real ship, and are a stop-gap until real photos are taken aboard.
