What it is for
The "Mooring line log" keeps the record the mooring guidelines (OCIMF MEG4) ask for in the ship’s Line Management Plan: every mooring line and tail, its certificate, how much it has been used, when it was inspected and when it must be retired.
A few words first. MBL is the minimum breaking load on the line’s certificate. LDBF is the line design break force, the strength the line was chosen to have for this ship. SDMBL is the ship design MBL from the mooring arrangement plan. The Line Management Plan (LMP) is the company document that sets inspection and retirement limits. The log never invents a limit: leave a field blank and no warning is raised for it.
Who can use it
Everyone, on every plan including Free. Normally the Chief Officer keeps it, with the Bosun recording inspections. Shared through the ship file on Officer Pro or a ship licence; on Free and Crew it stays on your phone.
Step by step
- Open "Mooring line log" from the Tools page and tap "Add line". Give it a "Position / line name" (for example "Fwd breast 1") and choose the "Material" (HMSF, Polyester, Polyamide (nylon), Polypropylene, Mixed polyolefin, Steel wire, Tail or Other).
- Copy the figures from the certificate: "Diameter", "Length", "Line MBL (certificate)", "Line design break force (LDBF)", "Ship design MBL (SDMBL)", "Manufacturer", "Certificate no." and the date "Put into service". Enter "Mooring operations so far" and the "Last end-for-end" date if known.
- Under "Limits from the manufacturer / Line Management Plan" enter "Inspect every" (days) and "Retire after" (months, and operations). Tap "Save".
- After each mooring, tap "Log a mooring operation (+1 all lines in use)": every line that is not retired gets one more operation counted.
- Tap a line to open it. Record an inspection with the date, "Inspected by", the condition ("Good", "Fair — monitor" or "Poor — assess for retirement") and a note, then tap "Record inspection". "Edit", "End-for-ended today", "Retire line" (or "Back in service") and "Delete" are in the same panel.
- Read the "Needs attention" card at the top and the pill on each line ("OK", or the number of warnings). Tap "Print" when you want the log on paper.
Tips
- One line per certificate; tails as their own lines with the material "Tail".
- A warning is amber when a limit is close (retirement age within 2 months, uses at 90 percent of the limit, an inspection due within 14 days) and red when it is passed, when an inspection is overdue, or when the last inspection found the line poor. An LDBF outside 100 to 105 percent of the SDMBL gives an amber warning.
What the inspector looks for
- Inspectors ask for the Line Management Plan and the record behind it: certificates, operations, inspections and retirements. This log is that record in one place; the print-out goes in the file next to the certificates.
- They look for lines kept in service past the manufacturer’s retirement criteria, for inspections that stopped, and for lines whose strength does not match the design. The red and amber warnings are what they will find.
Limits and good to know
- Saved on your phone; works with no signal. On Officer Pro or a ship licence it is part of the ship file: the ship’s phones sync through the SeaReady server over the ship’s Wi-Fi whenever it has internet (VSAT/Starlink) and in port; with no internet, changes are held on the phone until the connection returns. On Free and Crew it stays on your own phone.
- Printing: unlimited on paid plans, the trial and a ship licence. On the free plan this counts as one of the 3 main prints a month (plus up to 3 earned bonus prints), is watermarked "Made with SeaReady (free)", and the button shows how many are left; signed out, 1 a month on this phone.
- The log only warns against the limits you entered. With no limits it shows "OK" even for an old line, so enter the LMP figures first. Retired lines raise no warnings and are shown greyed out.
- Retirement age is counted in months of 30.44 days from the "Put into service" date; the inspection interval from the last recorded inspection, or from the in-service date if there is none.
