Catch up (welcome back)

Back after weeks away? See your role now, what changed, what is out of date, re-check old answers and get a fresh readiness score.

Updated 2026-10-11 · SeaReady’s own words. The app changes often — if a screen looks different from this page, tell us from Help → Suggest an improvement.

What it is for

The "Welcome back" screen is for a Master or officer who opens the app after a long gap — the ship was run by someone else for months, or you were on another ship. One screen says, in plain words, what your role is now, what changed while you were away, what is out of date, runs a "Still true?" check through the answers you gave before the gap, and shows a fresh readiness score.

The dashboard offers it on its own after 30 days away: "Welcome back — it has been … days since this phone was last used", with "Catch up" and "Not now". A quiet "Been away from the ship? Catch up" link is always there for anyone who knows they were away.

Who can use it

Everyone, on every plan, from the phone’s own copy of the ship. "What changed while you were away" needs a connection and the ship’s change history, which only the Master sees in full. Re-capturing a certificate by photo is part of the paid plans and the trial.

Step by step

  1. Tap "Catch up" on the dashboard card, or open "Catch up" from the Ship & crew menu.
  2. Read the box at the top: it says whether you are still the Master, whether the ship now has another Master, or that you left the ship — and what to do next. The screen never changes your role by itself.
  3. Under "What changed while you were away", read how many answers other people changed, by whom and in which sections, and tap "Open the full change history" if you need the detail.
  4. Under "Out of date now", work through the groups — Certificates, Photo repository, Drills, Checklists, Rest hours, Inspection dates, Findings — and tap "Open" on each item. For a certificate tap "Photo of the new certificate", or "Type the new dates" and "Save".
  5. Under "Still true?", take each old answer in turn: "Keep", "Change" (then pick Ready, Needs work, Not ready or N/A) or "Not sure"; "Skip this one" leaves it.
  6. Check the readiness score, then tap "Done — back to the dashboard". "Skip for now" also clears the welcome-back card.

Tips

  • Every answer you keep or change gets a dated "Re-checked" line in its note. A "Not sure" answer carries a review flag in its note until it is edited again.
  • Only answers you are allowed to edit are offered — on a ship licence that means your rank’s chapters; locked questions on the Free plan are skipped.
  • A certificate is listed when it expires within 90 days; repository photos when they are over 6 months old or due within 30 days; drills when the last completed one is older than its interval; your own rest hours when days are missing in the last 7.

Limits and good to know

  • Offline, "What changed while you were away" waits for a connection; everything else works from the phone’s copy.
  • Only the Master sees the whole change history. Anyone else sees the last changes of one question by opening it and tapping "Change history".
  • On the Free plan the certificate photo scan is locked — type the new dates by hand.
  • The 30-day gap is counted from the last time this phone was used, so a new phone has no gap to show until it has been used once.

Use it in the app

The same page sits inside SeaReady under Help → Handbook and behind the “?” in the screen’s header, and it reads offline at sea.
